Viettel yesterday held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new 140MW data centre campus in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Viettel is Vietnam’s largest telecommunications group and is wholly owned by the government under the Ministry of National Defence.

New data centre campus

Not much is known about the Tan Phu Trung Data Centre beyond official details in the press release, which pegged the location of the data centre as the Tan Phu Trung Industrial Park.

What we know:

  • Target PUE of < 1.4.
  • Select racks of up to 60kW.
  • Average rack density of 10kW.
  • "Developed to" Tier III standards.

Photos show a series of multi-storey data centres, while the release says it occupies 4 hectares (~40,000 sqm) of land, which is relatively compact for such a facility.

The campus will have a total capacity up to 140MW upon full completion before 2030; phase 1 is expected to be operational in Q1 2026.

A lot more data centre capacity

While advanced cooling systems and in-house AI technologies were mentioned, it is not clear if these are necessary for 10kW racks.

Viettel operates at least 14 data centres with a combined capacity of 87MW in Vietnam, so it has ample experience with data centres.

For sure, adding another 140MW of data centre capacity would be substantial, though this will be built over many years, likely in phases of 10-20 MWs each.

Big plans ahead

Viettel last year said it plans to build 24 data centres in the country by 2030 for a combined capacity of 560MW. Separately, it is investing in four new subsea cable routes.

To encourage foreign investments in new data centres, Vietnam last year relaxed rules that capped foreign ownership of data centres at 49%.

Under a new law that came into effect in July 2024, international companies can fully own and develop data centres in the country.
