ByteDance’s TikTok will invest 127 billion baht (US$3.8B) to establish multiple data centres in Thailand.

This announcement was made by Thailand’s Board of Investment (BOI) last Wednesday.

TikTok! You're in the Land of Smiles

Specifically, TikTok will establish server and related infrastructure in data centres located in Bangkok, Samut Prakan and Chachoengsao provinces.

According to some reports, this is part of a strategy to bolster its cloud and AI capabilities in the region.

No specific data centres were mentioned, though TikTok has traditionally adopted an anchor tenant or co-developer model for its data centres in Southeast Asia.

  • ByteDance is an anchor tenant for the first phase of Bridge Data Centres' MY06 data centre in Johor.
  • In Singapore, an AirTrunk-ByteDance consortium was awarded 20MW of data centre capacity as part of DC-CFA.

And yes, Bridge Data Centres has a data centre in Thailand, though it is a small 5MW facility.

TikTok's operations in Thailand is slated to begin in 2026, according to the BOI announcement.

Thailand, a rising star

There is growing interest in Thailand as a data centre location, even as Johor continue to experience incredible growth.

Last year, new player DIG unveiled plans for 1.5GW of data centre parks in 3 locations across Thailand, led by data centre veteran Clement Goh.

Instead of operating data centres, DIG says it will serve as the master developer for establishing and managing data centre parks.

Other tech giants that have announced expansion plans in Thailand in 2024:

  • AWS will invest US$5 billion over 15 years.
  • Google said it'll spend US$1B on a data centre.
  • Microsoft said it will build an Azure cloud region.

Indeed, AWS last mount announced a new cloud region in Thailand, its fourth in Southeast Asia with 3 availability zones.

Anyone heading to Thailand later this month?
