The surprising thing about the public cloud in Malaysia
Cheaper but not the cheapest.
Public Cloud giants are going to Malaysia. Just don't assume it'll be cheaper.
On this Unfiltered Friday, we observe the many Public Cloud players setting up cloud regions in Malaysia. Will they be cheaper?
Well, that depends.
Cloud in Malaysia
All major public clouds are moving to Malaysia. Just this week in Malaysia we have:
Last month:
And we know Microsoft is rushing to finish its Azure region in Malaysia too.
With so many cloud options, surely prices will be low. Right?
Not so fast, Sherlock
According to a detailed chart of the AWS cloud sent by Javier Ruiz Jimenez, it is true that Malaysia is cheaper than Singapore in almost every category.
The exception is db.m7g.16xlarge AZ (6.85% costlier) and LCU-hour (same).
But it’s worth noting that the AWS Malaysia region is costlier than Ohio in the US.
Javier suggests that Malaysian firms with customers outside the country might instead benefit from deploying in AWS Ireland or Ohio and use a CDN for a smooth experience.
With up to 20% potential cost savings, it makes sense to ditch the assumptions and do your own research.
Depressed prices in Johor
Of course, the data centre situation is a somewhat different matter.
According to the country head of a large data centre operator, the per kW pricing in Johor is currently depressed.
He attributed it to the huge data centre capacity in Johor, which still shows no sign of letting up.
Are you planning to move your organisation’s cloud deployments over to Malaysia? I’d love to hear more.
