The Huawei Mate X6 foldable is a worthy successor to the Mate foldable series, and it's coming to Singapore soon.

Earlier this week, Huawei announced its Mate X6 foldable, which sees it further slimmed down, toughened with better materials and generally improved.

I've had the chance to use one over the last couple of days. Here are my initial thoughts.

Initial thoughts

  • Built-in stand: The smartphone came with a well-fitted case with a built-in stand that swivels around. While the protrusion looked awkward initially, I grew quickly to liked it. Super convenient.
  • Camera bump is huge! The camera bump definitely stands out. That's a small price for the beefed-up camera though, which has 4x optical zoom and optical image stabilisation.

Experience to date

As I set up the Mate X6 with my usual apps and moved WhatsApp over, here's my experience so far:

  • Just as snappy as the latest flagships.
  • More comfortable grip with bundled case.
  • Common Huawei features like IR, fast charging.

Huawei continues to labour against the US blacklist and didn't talk much about its processor. However, (productivity) apps install and run as snappily as on other Android flagships.

The outside/front display of the Mate X6 is the same as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. However, narrower bezels and its thinner case meant it was much more comfortable in my hands.

And yes, I definitely welcomed Huawei's 66W fast charging. No more battery anxiety compared to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold!

A familiar platform

The Mate X6 that ships globally runs on the same EMUI 15 as its earlier devices. It doesn't come with Google but will run Android apps.

As I've shared previously, I'm able to use Huawei smartphones without issues by installing a couple of open-source software to replace the missing Google innards.

  • MicroG.
  • Aurora Store.

All apps that I use run, including Google Chat, Google Maps, Google Photos, Claude, Singpass and banking apps from local banks.

So far, ChatGPT is the only app that won't run.

The Huawei Mate X6 goes on preorder in Singapore this coming Wednesday, 18 December.
