STT GDC breaks ground on STT Johor 1 data centre

STT GDC today held the groundbreaking of its STT Johor 1 data centre, just over a year after announcing its entry into Johor in Nov 2023.

The groundbreaking today involves STT Johor 1 data centre, the first data centre facility within its Johor campus.

• 16MW of IT capacity.
• Operational by end-2026.
• Connectivity with STT Singapore 5.
• In Nusa Cemerlang Industrial Park, Iskandar Puteri.

STT GDC's Johor data centre campus is understood to have a development potential of 120MW, or more than its 7 Singapore data centres combined.

Going green

According to the press release, STT GDC is in discussions with several renewable energy providers to power STT Johor 1 with renewable electricity.

The data centre will leverage "advanced technologies" to further optimise energy use. While some might dismiss this as a gimmick, STT GDC is a forerunner in sustainability.

It's one of the first in the region to embrace:

Connectivity with Singapore

STT Johor 1 data centre will be directly connected with STT Singapore 5, billed as STT GDC’s regional interconnection hub.

Other STT GDC interconnection hubs in the region are:

• STT Kuala Lumpur 1.
• STT Bangkok 3.
• STT Makati (Philippines).
• STT VNG Ho Chi Minh City 1 (Vietnam).

A different approach

As I mentioned earlier this week, the approach to data centres has evolved. Today, data centre operators are securing land ahead of demand.

Unlike some operators that focus only on hyperscalers, STT GDC is clearly strengthening its appeal to enterprises with a region-wide data centre interconnect (DCI) service.

It's also vested in the AI space. GPU-as-a-service provider SMC operates out of data halls in two STT GDC data centres, where it operates the largest Nvidia GPU clusters in Singapore. And SMC runs immersion cooling for unbelievable PUE.
