Stack enters Malaysia with a 220MW campus
Multi-level campus will be located in Johor.
Stack Infrastructure today announced its entry into Malaysia with a new 220MW data centre in... once again, Johor.
And the initial phase is coming as early as Q4 2026, less than 24 months from today.
Stack comes to Johor
Two facilities.
- At Iskandar Puteri.
- Fibre ring connectivity to telcos.
Interestingly, Stack's new campus is just 10.8 hectares in size, or 108,000 sqm. In comparison, NTT's upcoming 290MW facility will sit on a 275,000 sqm plot.
This might explain why Stack's first building will be a "two-story data centre" with a "multi-level external electrical yard". This will be complemented by a second 100MW facility, which will presumably be built later.
Another note that drew my attention is how the new campus will be powered by TNB's 275kV infrastructure with onsite substations.
No stopping Malaysia
Since last year, I've written often about the rapid growth of the Malaysia data centre market, especially Johor, just across from Singapore.
In my view, Malaysia has rapidly evolved into a data centre hub that top players simply cannot afford to ignore.
Of course, there are geographical and geopolitical risks, particularly with potential restrictions on access to the latest GPUs.
However, investors are hedging their bets by acquiring land first and building in phases. The thinking is they can always hold and wait if necessary.
And two factors that matter in the holding game could well differentiate the winners from the losers.
- Financial clout.
- Access to adequate resources such as power.
This announcement is just one of the first. I expect many more announcements of new data centres in Malaysia this year.
