PDG today announced that it will invest US$5 billion to expand its data centre portfolio by nearly 50%.

In a press release, Princeton Digital Group (PDG) says it has acquired almost 500MW of powered land for AI-ready data centres in Asia.

Turning it up to 11

PDG currently has over 1GW of data centre capacity, a significant feat since it was founded only in 2017.

  • 1,000MW+ capacity in 20+ data centres*.
  • China, India, Indonesia, Japan, M'sia, S'pore.

Indeed, PDG's massive growth puts it neck and neck with AirTrunk in data centre capacity, though its strategy includes the acquisition of strategic data centres.

The latest PDG data centres appear to lean towards green-field developments though. And the data centre developer is ramping things up further.

Access to power

PDG's announcement is notable as I've heard of data centre operators that have struggled to acquire more power for their facilities.

Limitations could boil down to substations that are already at capacity, restrictions imposed by governments, or insufficient baseload capacity on the grid.

But PDG has everything sorted. In total, PDG will add 472MW with new data centres and expand existing campuses.

Going big in India, Johor

What struck me is how the bulk of PDG's data centre expansion will take place in just two countries: India and Malaysia (Johor).

  • In India, PDG will build a new 72MW CH1 campus in Chennai, while its MU1 campus in Mumbai will see three new data centre buildings to expand it from 50MW to 150MW.
  • In Malaysia, a staggering 200MW will be added to its data centre in Johor, bringing it to a mind-boggling 370MW. Note: JH1 was apparently a 170MW campus, not 150MW as mentioned by multiple press outlets.
  • Finally, there's also a new 100MW campus in Jakarta planned.

Conclusion

It seems to me that the fastest data centre growth in the region right now is happening in India and Johor.

And I really must visit JH1 now.
