What do I see happening in 2025? Here's one upcoming tech trend, how it will affect you, and what you can do about it today.

The rise of AI agents

The focus on AI is shifting from mundane LLMs to powerful AI agents. These are AI software that can autonomously perform tasks to achieve specified goals.

I expect this trend to accelerate in 2025. Why?

  • Tech giants are spending 10's of billions on AI.
  • Yet productivity gains, cost savings proved limited.
  • ROI of AI is now under intense scrutiny.

AI agents represent a route to dramatically higher returns through automated end-to-end task completion.

Jobs will be affected

As the world continues pouring billions into AI development, from AI models to AI agents, the outcome is inevitable: some jobs will disappear.

Traditional comparisons about the impact of technology don't take the unique characteristics of AI into consideration:

  • Primarily based on software, AI scales almost instantly.
  • Impact is broad and affects even highly skilled roles.

Even if AI never gets any better as of today, I expect jobs to continue to disappear and others to change in the years ahead. It just hasn't reached everyone - yet.

Develop AI resilience

So, what can we do about this today? The short answer: we need to develop AI resilience.

This is a multi-faceted endeavour that include:

  • Develop skills that are hard for AI to replicate.
  • Use AI to do existing work faster and better.
  • Broaden work competence and expertise.

What do you think? Do you have any suggestions on how we might develop AI resilience in our jobs?
