NTT Data announces 290MW data centre campus in Johor
Will be seven times larger than all its existing data centres in Malaysia combined.
NTT Data has confirmed that it is building a gigantic new campus in Johor. This will be seven times larger than all its existing data centres in Malaysia, combined.
In August, I cited a report on the Star which said NTT Data Group had acquired a parcel of land in Johor, enough - I speculated - for a massive data centre.
We now know what NTT Data is building. And it's downright massive at 290MW.
And it's not a typo.
NTT in Malaysia
NTT currently has six data centres in Malaysia, all located at Cyberjaya.
Over the years, I've watched as NTT methodically built one data centre after the next, growing with demand and constructing them adjacent to each other at Cyberjaya.
Compared to modern hyperscale data centres, however, NTT's data centres in Malaysia are relatively small. According to its marketing collaterals, CBJ3, CBJ4, CBJ5, and CBJ6 offer 40MW in total.
Industry sources also tell me that the older CBJ1 and CBJ2 data centres are full and no longer marketed.
Not early, but definitely very big
As I wrote earlier, the land it acquired is around 275,000 sqm. For comparison, both CBJ5 and CBJ6 data centres are 7-storey buildings that offer 4,800 sqm of IT space each.
So what did NTT Data confirm about its upcoming Johor data centre at Gelang Patah?
- Massive 290MW of IT capacity.
- Total of six data centre buildings.
- Initial 48MW will go live in April 2027.
From the large 48MW in its first phase - which by itself will double the capacity of its existing data centres in Malaysia, NTT is clearly confident of filling it up.
Additional details
The main data centre clusters in Johor right now are:
- Sedenak Tech Park (STeP).
- Nusajaya Tech Park (NTP).
- Southern Industrial Logistic Cluster (SILC).
The land acquired by NTT is located in the SILC.
I wrote yesterday that Johor is a once-a-generation opportunity to become the regional data centre powerhouse. And I don't see Johor or Malaysia taking its feet off the padel.
