Ninja Van powers ahead with Huawei Cloud
Leading logistics tech firm sings praises of Huawei Cloud.
Ninja Van uses Huawei Cloud to drive its logistics empire, says co-founder and CTO Shaun Chong.
Shaun spoke today at the Huawei Cloud Summit, where he gave the public cloud giant his glowing endorsement for helping Ninja Van meet its tech needs.
Ninja Van today
From driving, sorting, delivering, and sleeping in the warehouse, the co-founders of logistics tech firm Ninja Van has gone.
Today, Ninja Van delivers all over Southeast Asia.
- Over 2,000 hubs and stations.
- Serving over 600 million.
- 2 million parcels daily.
Used by brands such as Lazda, Sephora, and Amazon. It was no overnight success, however.
According to Shaun, Ninja Van got there by:
- Relying solely on tech to meet expectations.
- Uses data extensively for optimisation.
- Among the best in cost-per-parcel.
The tech stack
There wasn't enough time to go into everything, but here's what I caught.
Ninja Van worked to containerise its entire tech stack in 2016. Today, everything runs on Huawei Cloud's CCE Turbo container service.
- Background jobs.
- Message queue.
- Databases.
- APIs.
It relies on Huawei Cloud to do tasks such as:
- Cloud scaling to handle fluctuations in load.
- Manage TBs of vehicle tracking data.
- Optimise SLA on pickup process.
- Capture real-time updates.
In fact, its infrastructure team has less than 10 people.
Looking ahead
Shaun says he's never believed in serverless due to the scale at Ninja Van - the cost stacks up quickly. But he says he's finding Huawei Cloud's CCI "interesting".
CCI stands for Cloud Container Instance and is a serverless container engine that Huawei Cloud launched globally last year.
Shuan: "CCI is something we're exploring. With containers, the game has changed... I believe CCI even bills to the seconds."
And Ninja Van has apparently migrated "quite a bit" of its workload onto the ARM platform.
Shaun: "We care a lot about the technology we use... because we believe we require certain technologies to scale."
Huawei Cloud in Singapore
In her keynote, Huawei's Jacqueline Shi praised Singapore for being an international hub for businesses. She vowed that Huawei Cloud will continue investing here.
Rex Lei Yang also pointed to Huawei Cloud's strong presence in Singapore with its 5 AZs and racks accounting for 10% of the market share.
Specifically:
- More than 100% increase in Singapore since last year.
- Collaborated with over 500 tech partners.
- Served over 1,000 customers here.
