This 17.3-inch foldable screen from Asus is a glorious, portable device that I won't want to bring out of the house.

The monitor that folds

I recently had the chance to check out the Asus ZenScreen Fold OLED MQ17QH for a few days.

  • 17.3-inch OLED screen (2560x1920).
  • 12.5-inch when folded up.
  • 100% DCI-P3 colour.
  • Weight of 1.17kg.

In case you were wondering, the monitor uses a foldable screen, the same kind found in foldable smartphones - but expanded to a glorious 17.3 inches.

And yes, the price is similarly upsized to an eye-watering SG$3,699.

Good to see, nice to touch...

I declined to test out this monitor by bringing it on a trip; flying is stressful enough without having to worry about breaking a fragile foldable screen.

To be clear, the MQ17QH felt solid in my hands. The hinge is tested to withstand at least 30,000 open-and-close cycles - it certainly didn't feel flimsy at all.

But you know what I mean.

The more the merrier

I've always been a fan of multi-monitor workstations, and a 17.3-inch portable screen that stows into a 12.5-inch package is amazing.

One possible use case would be with a smartphone and wireless keyboard. It certainly feels larger-than-life when paired with a laptop.

I wrote about the Asus ZenScreen Duo last week, another portable monitor with two distinct OLED screens. For most people, I suspect that would be the most practical.
