A fire at Digital Realty's SIN11 data centre in Singapore has impacted Alibaba Cloud's Availability Zone C.

No broadsheet has covered the fire yet, though Hazel Moises got post up this afternoon (Link in comments).

Fire in the cloud

Alibaba Cloud came to Singapore in 2015 and currently has three availability zones here.

In an update at 10.20 am today, Alibaba Cloud posted an alert about anomalies in its Availability Zone C of the Singapore region, resulting in malfunctioning services.

At 10.55 am, an update noted that a "fire incident" in its data centre saw the proactive shutdown of most network and security products in the affected zone.

Users were encouraged to migrate their production workloads. By 12.15 pm, all relevant cloud services have completed "disaster recovery" procedures.

Pending official statement

Based on independent reports from sources I trust, the fire took place at Digital Realty's SIN11 data centre, with multiple fire trucks spotted around the facility.

I was between appointments today and couldn't swing by to see for myself, but data centre fires in Singapore are rare. Everything points to a localised issue.

There is no official word from Digital Realty yet, but a statement will likely be made in time.

The Loyang campus

Digital Realty has three data centres in Singapore: SIN10 in Jurong, as well as SIN11 and SIN12 in Loyang.

  • SIN10 (Greenfield - acquired).
  • SIN11 (Redeveloped).
  • SIN12 (Greenfield).

SIN11 is a 4-storey data centre with 13.2MW of capacity. It was redeveloped from an existing paper store and opened its doors in 2016.

Part of a Loyang "campus" with dark fibre connectivity, SIN11 is just 350m down the road from the much larger, five-storey SIN12 data centre at 50MW.

Both SIN11 and SIN12 facilities are close to the Changi North Cable landing station, a key subsea landing station for the region.

I'll update this post if I learn more.

Official Statement from Digital Realty

Digital Realty became aware of a fire alarm being triggered at our SIN11 data center at 7.45am on 10th September 2024. Our response protocol was deployed as soon as the fire alarm was triggered. All on-site personnel were safely evacuated by 8.15am and no injuries are reported.

We swiftly notified and advised impacted customers to activate their business continuity plans.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) responded to the incident and is working to secure the premises and stabilize the situation.

We will share further updates as additional information becomes available.
