Empyrion Digital today announced that it has received the approval of the Thailand BOI to develop its first data centre in Bangkok.

The influential Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) is a government agency under the Prime Minister's office to promote and support investments in Thailand.

TH1 data centre

TH1 is projected to be ready for service in Q4 2026. What we know about it:

  • Located in Bang Na.
  • 12MW IT load.
  • 4 storeys.

The location is interesting.

Bang Na is a key gateway connected by major highways with access to reliable power supply. It is also elevated for reduced risk from flooding.

Empyrion says TH1 will focus on achieving low PUE and WUE to minimise environmental impact. It will also benefit from the extensive fibre optics networks available.

Rise of Empyrion

Registered in Singapore in 2020 as a portfolio company of Seraya Partner, Empyrion Digital has grown rapidly since its inception.

It acquired Dodid's Singapore data centre in 2021, and is currently constructing multiple data centres across Asia, namely:

  • South Korea (29.4MW).
  • Thailand (12MW).
  • Taiwan (7MW).
  • Japan (25MW).

In a press release from the end of 2024, the company indicated it plans to expand its data centres in Asia to over 170MW by end-2025.

The currently announced facilities don't add up to this figure by a wide breadth, which means Empyrion likely has other unannounced data centre projects up its sleeves.

Focus on sustainability

In my conversations with Empyrion, one thing I'm hearing consistently is its focus on sustainability. This is actually a lot harder than it sounds, and an area many data centre operators only pay lip service to.

Empyrion clearly believes in it though, and Seraya Partners is known to make sustainability-focused investments. I'm really curious about their technical strategy here.

I will have the chance to learn more about Empyrion's upcoming data centre in South Korea soon, so am looking forward to it.
