Easter, faith, and the freelance life I never planned for
I reflect on how giving led to purpose.

This Easter I was reminded of God's love for all of mankind. I've shared how I became an accidental writer. Here's the part that I've only shared with friends.
Everything started with giving
I never planned to be a writer. Instead, I wanted to work in technology. I taught myself how to code, studied IT, and worked as an IT professional for some years.
Then I joined the gig economy years before the term was coined, building a portfolio career where I lectured at a local polytechnic and wrote professionally.
It was the time of my life. My income also doubled, then doubled again from my modest full-time income previously.
While I attributed it to fortuitous timing - and it was - it's a bit more nuanced than that.
You see. Everything happened after I pledged an amount to give at church. As I sought additional income to fulfil the pledge, doors miraculously opened.
A different pathway
Were there times when I yearned to be back in a full-time role? Perhaps - because anyone who says being a solopreneur is a bed of roses isn't being completely honest.
But looking back, and with the wisdom of age, there's really nothing more I would have asked for.
I gained things that I would only appreciate years later:
- Accompanied wife for every gynae appt.
- There for every kindergarten performance.
- Freedom to send the kids to school as needed.
- Attended to my daughters' selective mutism needs.
And yes, it also gave me the opportunity to serve in ways both big and small.
My older girl recently shared how the school counsellor invited pupils to confide in her if they needed support or help.
"Why would I share with [the counsellor]. If I have problems, of course I'll tell Daddy and Mommy first!" she exclaimed, somewhat bewildered.
My heart swelled with pride.
He gave that we may have life
What began as a step of obedience opened doors I couldn’t have planned.
But more than that, I am reminded that the greatest gift was already given - on the cross. And because of that, the story doesn’t end here.
Happy Easter!
